Alex Lloyd - 'Hello The End' (EMI)
2/5
By: Clara Burtenshaw
Imagine a car being driven interminably down the middle of an endless road, and you not only conjure up the sleeve of acclaimed Aussie singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd's new single, but the repetitive, predictable sound of it chug-chug-chugging along.
Beginning with a downbeat alt-country intro that sounds very much like that from Paul Weller's 'Changing Man' the track soon becomes swamped in a congestion of REM, Crowded House and Turin Brakes nuances. Michael Stipe-like vocals laden with those weary, pensive tones commonly associated with MOR 'witticism' are unfortunately rescinded by an instrumental melody trying so hard to sound laidback that it cannot muster the musical energy to break free from the gridlock, the work culminating pitifully in Lloyd singing 'The End' over... and... over.
Hello, the end??? Thank Goodness.
