Secret Machines - 'Nowhere Again' (679)
4/5

Now, what do you get when you cross Interpol's 'Obstacle 1' with The Kinks' 'Lola' (that one'll leave you with ponderous, sleepless nights)?
Something quite this good, that's what. Granted, it only sounds like that for a little while (and perhaps only to certain odd ears), but it is as sweet a proposition as that hypothetical mashing together of classic tunes new and old suggests.
If you can fall in love with a song just because of the way someone says a couple of words on it (at 2'38" on 'Nowhere Again', the words 'kick drum' are sang in a way that's so goddamn cool it'll make you want to start a band immediately), you know you're on to a winner. At first intriguing, then positively addictive, the Secret Machines have conjured a sound that is dark but inviting, consists of innumerable ideas and sections but flows brilliantly, and is joyously infectious without an instance of a proper chorus to be found anywhere.
All that remains is for you to sit back and soak it up. Passionate music played with deft precision that's high on musical intelligence but requires minimal effort to enjoy to the full - yes, more like this please.
