Polysics - 'Kaja Kaja Goo' (Sur La Plage)
4/5

Don't know about you, but the first we heard of Polysics was in the entirely appropriate setting of the 'Adam & Joe Go Tokyo' show. The two loveable eccentric comedians spent a few weeks poking light fun at the traditions and quirks of the city, and always rounded the show up with a slot from a prominent Japanese band unheard of in the UK. Most of them were rubbish. One of them was Polysics.
That night, they sounded a bit like a more electronic-based Melt Banana covering one of the funny (and surprisingly good) little ditties A&J themselves are fond of penning. 'Kaja Kaja Goo' sounds a little bit like a Kajagoogoo track (as you might have been able to tell from the title and the fact that the band's own Nick Beggs guests on bass), but one that's being partially butchered by Kid 606. So, is it any good? Well, it's certainly a lot better than most of the bands that ever graced the aforementioned programme's stage, but it's also highly superior to a large proportion of all records ever made.
Whilst not being the most inaccessible thing to come from the Far East by a mile, it does feature a demented keyboard line, a yelping incomprehensible Japanese man and a rhythm that feels as if you're being grabbed by the spine and vigorously shaken around. And it pays homage to Kajagoogoo. What more do you want?
