Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - 'Agnes, Queen Of Sorrow' (Domino)
4/5
By: Tim Dellow
The Godfather of Post Rock sets aside the 'alt'. And focuses on the 'country' on this delightful new single. While as old-skool as drinking bourbon on the back porch, and admittingly lacking the complexities (or indeed, the alt.) of his classic album 'I See A Darkness' this extension of his re-recorded 'Palace' songs (released as 'Greatest Palace Music') still washes a hell of a lot better than Jack White's affair with Loretta Lyn.
A meandering postcard of a failing relationship, neither party truly wanting to let go, circles the refrain, 'If you wait another day, then I will wait a day' as subtle slide tones slip languidly over each other and into your ear canals. As warming as a whisky by a roaring fire, and apparently packaged with a video directed by the stickman master David Shrigley.
