Graham Coxon - 'Spectacular' (Transcopic / Parlophone)
4/5
By: Tim Dellow
'Spectacular'. Now that's a real Graham word. You can picture him sitting next to a Food gold disk in The Good Mixer, muttering to himself in a drunken stupor; 'Another brandy? Why sir,' followed by a long breath through his teeth, 'that would be spectacular,' adjusting his glasses and falling off his stall.
However, Graham has changed.
On jumping a sinking ship (perennial 'Q' magazine favourites Blur), he's sobered up, accepted his fatherhood and decided that he wants to compete with the arrogant toss-bag Damon 'Wigga' All-bran, at his own game; The Pop Record. Without the help of f**king cartoon monkeys.
So. After four varying lo-fi albums, this is the third single from the fifth, hi-fi debut 'Happiness in Magazines'. A swampy garage-grunge stomp that obliterates 'Think Tank' with a wall of noisy feedback. And the best chorus since Blur, sorry, Graham wrote 'Coffee and TV'. Alex, you can stick that double bass up your arse. He ain't coming back. And for us, that's a good thing.
