Devendra Banhart - 'A Sight To Behold' (XL)
4/5
By: Toby L
Comparisons in mode and mood and timbre are easy, but futile, with Devendra Banhart. Almost completely always on who you speak with, you're going to get a different spin - the starkness of Leonard Cowen; the desolateness of Nick Drake; the whimsy and strain of either Buckley.
But bollocks to all that. Banhart is DEVENDRA BANHART: 2003/4's most enlightening folk discovery. A man with a frailty and shiver in his throat that'll melt you upon instant exposure, and a man whose balladry - 'A Sight To Behold' - only requires mere string and acoustic guitar accompaniment in order to hit home its riveting, haunting (al)lure. Achingly pleasing.
