Broadway Project - 'Autumn Breaks' (Memphis Industries)

3/5

By: Tim Dellow

Broadway Project - 'Autumn Breaks'Autumn doesn't break. Autumn flitters onwards, in a soft evolution.

Leaves brown, erect, then crumple, their skeletal veins carried off by the complicit wind, leading them to the decomposition of winter.

Beats, however, break.

And so this lounge-core IDM (that's Intelligent Dance Music) flitters wind-chimes synonymous with the aforementioned foliage layers, into the downward spiral of the earth, its gritty old-skool breaks fertilising the roots of the music, grounding it and leading to fruition.

Dark, but not as menacing as the twisted exhalations of Boards of Canada. Lush, but with less depth than Four Tet. A magpie's nest of samples, but the beat selection lacks the gusto and oomph of DJ Shadow. Still enjoyable, but without committing itself to a beautiful gesture or dance form, 'Autumn Breaks' lacks the emotion of its contemporaries. A confused effort, but one not devoid of merit.
