Sam Roberts - 'Brother Down' (Vertigo)

4/5

By: Lauren Gallagher

Sam Roberts - 'Brother Down'There's something homespun about this one. The mood: a summer day, on a back porch, beer in hand, listening to the saucy acoustic rhythms of 'Brother Down'. Yet there's something brooding here, as Roberts muses, 'I think my life is passing me by,' while insistent beats tap into the reflective mind with urgency. The electric guitar swaggers forth by the end of the song, and seems to sonically assert 'get up, and get on with it...'

Sam Roberts' fetching tunes and musicianship just might drive you to do the same, albeit with his music as your soundtrack. The unexpected winner of several of Canada's JUNO awards this year (Celine Dion, Sarah McLaughlin, and Nickelback were among the running favourites), Roberts is finally receiving the attention he deserves.
