Kasabian - 'L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever)' (BMG)
3/5

Brassy tin soldiers march into the Liverpudlian cobbled streets. Through the alleys, people loiter and lean out of broken windows, wooden pub doors creak as the country-people curiously peer and investigate. Not with urgent need, you understand, but simple, plodding lifeless curiosity. Amongst the heads in the dense are the khaki mac wearing Kasabian, warming Grolsch in hand they observe, duly, submersed under the same grey, damp sky.
Kasabian's follow-up single to top twenty hit 'Club Foot' works. Massively radio-worthy with tempting and delightful electronic pattering along against the driving and distinct chorus line, this is packed to the rafters with anthemic chants, a chorus loudly, almost raucously strident behind the frontman's coos. This is what Britpop has evolved to, what the cult of Oasis inspired and what electro-influenced open air rock has accumulated into. Yeah, it's nice; it's creditable as good indie-rock; but it's not half as exciting or honed as we were expecting. Perhaps it's too soon yet.
