Princess Headbutt - 'The Emerald Beak EP' (Unlabel)

4/5

By: Tim Dellow

Princess HeadbuttWhatever happened to operatic rock? Queen looked like they'd bring it to the masses, but instead peddled their bicycle so far up Freddie's arse the stabilisers of Prog (i.e. the passion and empathy) were embedded between his buttocks and buried with him. Pink Floyd should have quit years ago. Mansun tried to give it a revival with their stupendously overblown 'Six' album. And failed. And Radiohead, bless 'em for trying, came from far too conventional roots to really progress anything. The less said about Muse, the better.

But these guys, as if you hadn't guessed from their absurd mockier, are nuttier than a Cadbury's fruit and nut cake. And that's no bad thing. In an era where so many bands are trying to be boring from the offset, taking themselves way too seriously and just worrying what they look like, this bunch of misfits instated a cornet player as lead vocalist, and made a three inch CD which is simply, so, so refreshing.

And there's beauty too, scrape below the mad babble at the start of 'Animal Empire' and you hear a lost young lady, dreaming of the simple life in the midst of the swarming galaxies of space rock, fantasising about her own farm, with her true love, rearing chickens and piglets, before the music breaks into an awe-fest of brass bands kissing the lips of eternity. By track-three, you'll be bemused as to how a group with a budget of zero has managed to create something so lush, music you can touch, music you can taste. Life's big adventure.
