The Zillions - 'Play Zig Zag Zillionaire' (679 / Music For Ears)
3/5

You could call them schizophrenic, but the more polite term is 'multi-faceted'. Aussie Nick Craft (aka 'The Zillions' and brother of M.Craft), clearly has a variety of influences, and weaves them into a pleasant tapestry on this EP.
Peppy 'Raincoat Girlz' and its garage twang resembles Chicago's The Ponys, but this is welcome; 'Don't Waste Your Time On Me' shakes a capricious tambourine, which nods to some 60's fun; while the six-string of 'Step Into The Sun' slides around with a sense of artful intoxication - if the guitar could walk, it would be traipsing crookedly - but with style.
There's even a touch of the post-rock on closing track 'One Step Behind Me,' including the fuzzy drone of organ, vocals, sparse guitar, and a charming twinkling of chimes. The Zillions really do encompass that 'all of the above' notion, and with bewitching charm.
