Franz Ferdinand - 'Michael' (Domino)
4/5

Franz Ferdinand - a band it would be cool to dislike only if they ever showed any sign of this flood of excellent, jittery tunes coming to an end. We can see it in your eyes, you love it, and the ones who refuse to are lying. Now that's not cool.
For so long, we've needed Bowie's 'John, I'm Only Dancing' to be given a kick up the arse and sent flying head first in to the noughties, and with 'Michael' and all its tense suaveness and sexual ambiguity, it's arrived. Admittedly they could have chosen nearly any cut from their eponymous debut to round off the album milking spree, but personally, we're glad it's this one - 'Michael' shows a slightly darker tone, another side to the quirkiness, an oddness that you're tempted to investigate further, that is, if it you weren't already too busy 'dancing like a beautiful dance whore' to its ever so slightly skewed little rhythms.
So this is 'Franz Ferdinand', for now, signing off. Yeah, we may miss them. Yes, we'll certainly be waiting very attentively for their reappearance. For now though, it's been very kind of them it was to leave us with something of this quality to wobble to until they return.
