Dashboard Confessional - 'Vindicated' (Vagrant / Interscope)
1/5

'Music From & Inspired By the Motion Picture Spider Man 2'. Read that sentence again. Who has really been to see 'Spider Man 2' and thought, 'Hey, y'know what, I feel like making a record today...'?
And surely, if such a bizarre occurrence was ever actually possible, the record they'd make would be slightly different to Dashboard Confessional's 'Vindicated'. Wouldn't it use as its muse the thought of a bloke who could shoot webs from his fingers and jump around buildings in a silly suit fighting bad guys who were part human and part octopus, for pete's sake? The bits that were actually pretty cool? Not just the bit where he gets to snog the face off Kirsten Dunst?
You'd like to think so, wouldn't you. But few things are as soppy as our man Chris Carrabba and his attempt to convince the populations of America's malls that he means it, and few of even his efforts are quite this overly plush, polished and forcibly emotional to the point of sounding like he in fact doesn't mean it (whatever 'it' is, after all; it's about 'Spider Man 2'...) at all. Talk about backfiring.
You know the worst thing? When the guy just sits down with an acoustic guitar in a small, intimate little venue, he's actually quite listenable. Just never let him near another movie theatre.
