Jet - 'Cold Hard Bitch' (Elektra)

2/5

By: Thomas Hannan

Jet - 'Cold Hard Bitch'The main argument usually put forward in Jet's favour is that the whole thing is fun. Some throwaway good times, rock and roll the way it should be played, with wild abandon and a selection of meaty hooks, etc. And yeah, they've occasionally shown that side to them - 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl' certainly got this foot tapping, and 'Look What You've Done' even raised the suspicion that there was some melodic gift behind all the rock posturing too.

Sadly, 'Cold Hard Bitch' lacks either that tuneful spark or admirable swagger. It sounds decidedly like Jet by numbers, which for only the fourth single is somewhat worrying. On paper, the ingredients are all there - the expected chunky riffs, macho growl and cool guy stance, but somehow it's incredibly easy to simply ignore. It's fair enough to be content without pushing the boundaries of rock and roll as we know it, but to have songs such as this that are able to slip past without creating any real feeling whatsoever is, in Jet's world, something of a crime.

So here we have it then. This is fun. Surely, though, it's not wrong of us to expect to enjoy it a little bit more?
