Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - 'Burn It Off' (Mute)

3/5

By: Toby L

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - 'Burn It Off'In a troubled age where major record-labels are bricking it over their respective futures, anti-CDR-exploitation, Jon Spencer and his fervent Blues Explosion proffer a more flippant view; 'Burn it off...'

Yet you suspect the parallels to the crumbling recording-industry and Spencer's actual lyrical inspiration aren't so forthcoming as that - no, we can't quite understand what Jonny boy's Iggy-slurring away at in this, his latest from impending new album, 'Damage'. (Not that we've quibbled before.) Now, we don't doubt 'Burn It Off's joie de vivre, or rugged strut-pants, yet we do feel a touch of déjà vu - after a literal deluge of rock 'n' roll apers following the past three years, and despite his earnest, modern 'root of it all' status, such balls-out garage exertions seem tested and partially ancient.

Better, through, is the DJ Shadow collaboration that follows - 'Fed Up & Low Down': hurtling, breakneck samples, garbled vox and the pace of a Yeti rolling down the hills of Aspen; surely a far superior single-contender in retrospect, anyhow?
