Gomez - 'Sweet Virginia' (Virgin)
4/5

C'mon kids... let's all gather 'round and play another fun round of 'How Did They Win The Scorn of the Nation?' Sure, it's easy with the build-'em-up-n-bring-'em-down celeb culture of this tiny island. However, some folks seem totally undeserving of the prize. Step forward Gomez - the band that many a hip young thing would quickly throw in the bin (or hide behind the sofa when their painfully-hip, flashy mateys pop around). It's an unfortunate burden. Is having a singer who occasionally sounds like Chris Rhea really such an indictment?
Gomez seem less than bothered by all of this. In fact, they continually rise to the occasion - throwing the proverbial smack-down and penning a damn fine tune. New single 'Sweet Virginia' is no exception.
It's often said 'if you love something set it free', with crazy Southern relatives tacking on the warning of 'if it don't come back then hunt it down and kill it'. 'Sweet Virginia' adheres to this, handing out the leave-if-you-think-you-can axiom but sitting more like a morose threat than a gentle urge. Sounding like a lazily sticky Southern waltz at sundown, 'Sweet Virginia' loads up on lush strings twirling gracefully maudlin amongst shuffling guitar and a lone mandolin swaying gently with Gomez's trademark vocal harmonies.
Gomez would have something to crow about if their critics weren't so busy eating it. Sweet indeed.
