Adem - 'Ringing In My Ear' (Domino)

4/5

By: Kevin Molloy

Adem - 'Ringing...'Singer-songwriters will ever bear their souls. There's a yearning to be understood, the never-ending struggle to capture an honest portrayal of their overly pensive emotions. Adem, judging on current form, might well ask where all this trouble lies, given the ease with which 'Ringing In My Ear' seeps from his tongue to your chest via ever-fickle recordings and speakers.

Such is the assumption of this new old-friend, he relates those most personal of thoughts without a hint of disquiet, soulfully informing us 'I still feel guilty for the things that I have done these past 15 days.' In your head he finishes off his beer and continues to relate an eloquent melancholy in earnest over the bar table. The voice wavers perfectly at the difficult points in the telling, and draws you into a story you don't understand, but feel with all your heart.

He enters an over-crowded market with little to his name, but truly he sings that, 'I've been with people who sing gorgeous songs, but you're just ringing in my ear.' With songs that echo so sublimely for weeks after their first listen, he should find no problem in reaching new ears, and resting there for a good time to come.
