Gisli - 'TV = The Devil' (EMI)
2/5
By: Thomas Hannan
If reality TV was actually about reality and not just a bunch of celebrity wannabes demeaning themselves for the public's momentary entertainment, wouldn't admitting to being bored of it equate to being bored of life in general?
Perhaps. But as we all know, it's not about reality; it's all about the money. And therefore, it's more than a little dull. And what happens when you base a record solely on such a bland phenomenon? You guessed it: a pretty dull record.
Iceland's Gisli isn't bored of life; after all, he's in a rock band. As he puts it in his rant against every show that ever involved a hidden camera, though - 'competitions on television are driving me insane,' over the beefiest of guitar sounds and a thumping rhythm. Interesting, we think. We've always got time to listen to one angry guy taking his frustrations out on a guitar.
So what went wrong? Why does this sound like more of a whinge than an empowered diatribe? Well, Gisli could have taken reality television so seriously that the TV actually has made him numb, incapable of mustering anything more than a simple riff and mild criticisms. But this seems a little unlikely, seeing as he professes to hate the thing, not to have been drawn in by it. Something however, has indeed got his goat. Who knows. Maybe his application for 'Big Brother 5' got lost in the post.
