The Rakes - 'Strasbourg' (City Rockers)
3/5
By: Toby L
Following their tumultuous, highly savoury launch shout in the shape of '22 Grand Job' ('22 GRAND JOB! IN THE CITY IT'S ALRIGHT! IT'S ALRIGHT!'), arch London poet-foursome The Rakes return with another infectious, ebullient throbbing of capital cool, circa 2004.
'Strasbourg' is a limbs-flailing furore of Blur/'Bank Holiday' bellows, Germanic Franz Ferdinand/'Darts Of Pleasure' exclamations and sturdy pop acumen; better still is the ensuing bounce of 'Can't Get Laid' (the tawdry, tongue-in-cheek tale of last-resorting to 'ejaculation' and hookers for early-twenties kicks), while the demo-recording 'Ausland Mission' is not without its moody, brooding build-up expanse.
