Polly Paulusma - 'Over The Hill' (One Little Indian)

3/5

By: Laure James

Polly PaulusmaOrganic, simmering and infectious, Polly Paulusma is one of the crisper, more challenging British singer/songwriters available today.

Resurrecting the strangely parochial yet universal observations of the New Acoustic Movement, Paulusma combines generously layered orchestral string arrangements, rhythmic and stirring percussion and her own supple, breathy vocals to produce a sentimental yet focused latest. And Polly seems to exhaustively enthuse about the energy critics seem to channel toward categorising her; one of the key elements which separates Paulusma from the volume of accessible, acoustic lounge pioneered by the likes of Cullum and Norah is that, fundamentally, Paulusma isn't as accessible as her pianist peers.

Tore Johannsen's production, meanwhile, gives Polly's artistic temperament direction and fluency, while cunningly diverting her from the sordid 'easy listening' bracket. So with such a stunning and ultimately delicate music in force, supporting Paulusma's own distinctive and nurturing vocals, a very possibly explosive career beckons for young Paulusma, while something tells us she'll have a few surprises of her own yet.
