Clayhill - 'Northern Soul' (Eat Sleep)

3/5

By: Lauren Gallagher

Clayhill - 'Northern Soul'Everyone needs a little down-home twang. Clayhill sound like Appalachia folk hipsters who were transplanted to California, though they in fact hail from the home of the Union Jack. Gentle atmospherics, and a crisp acoustic guitar open 'Northern Soul' before Gavin Clark's nasal, Americana vocals grind over the top. The rhythm swings playfully, but Clark's voice is an acquired taste, which we've yet to, ahem, acquire.

Musically, however, the staunch display of Clayhill is refreshingly laid-back. It's not tight, it ain't snappy, but its mellow sway may well lull you - regardless of sinus issues.
