Marjorie Fair - 'Waves' (EMI)

4/5

By: Thomas Hannan

Marjorie FairWorrying comes as an integral part of loving someone (or something). Because of your fondness, you're bound to this unshakable, vested interest in the well-being of the object of your affection, as their possible demise could have quite upsetting consequences for the both of you. It's fair to say that we're drawn in by Marjorie Fair. Just after this brief little offering, we care about them. With 'Waves', they've been so nice to us that we don't want any form of harm to come their way.

A little trouble on the horizon, then, is enough to send us into a mild panic. In a world saturated with sultry melodic indie rock, we wonder, are the faint, delightful scribbles of the 'Fair going to fall on deaf ears? Will they survive the inevitable, if favourable Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips comparisons to let their own unique, charming little subtleties and sweeping romanticisms reveal themselves to an adoring world? Simply - can others feel the way we do?

We hope so. But at least we've heard 'Waves' - all the good bits of a summer's day condensed in to four minutes - no wasps, no sunburn; just sunsets and meadows. Better to have loved and lost, and all that.
