Auf Der Maur - 'Taste You' (EMI)
4/5
By: Kevin Molloy
'I will taste you; I've got a big mouth.' How is something this dirty and sexy so magical? The French version's sultry vocal is even more captivating and mysterious, and even more explicit ('Je vais t'avaler'... we won't explain, revisit your high school days, and look up a naughty word in the dictionary). Indeed, not using the original French lyrics could be the only faux pas committed on Auf der Maur's part (you can find them in the video). The otherworldly effect of combining no-strings-rock with this much soundscape is only enhanced by the sensually-laden fairy words from across the channel. But we're not going to complain, for who can truly find a flaw with someone they've fallen so headlong in love with?
For truly; she's lost none of the attitude of Hole ('I need filling my love, I need it louder than bombs'), and yet has managed to keep the sublime melodies of The Smashing Pumpkins, whilst propelling herself as an artist: second fiddle (or bass) she shall play no more. Part of the trick is in the über-talent of her friendship circle (Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan are regular backing musicians, and we could swear that's Lanegan's voice reverberating towards the end of this track). But this is also confirmation, should any be necessary, that Auf der Maur is easily the most exciting lady in rock, and with songs like this the world will soon kneel at her feet, firmly planted in an all-encompassing rock stance.
