The Datsuns - 'Girl's Best Friend' (V2)
3/5
By: Toby L
If folklore be believed, mid-headline appearance at a cavernous London venue a year back, The Datsuns were snatched from a stage to thousands and never returned. Rumours of their whereabouts extend to having returned to New Zealand, where the band have become amateur, but keen, horse-trainers, and vintage clothes salesmen.
All pish, obviously, yet it seems many of the media quarters that once heralded The Datsuns as a life-changing force have now all but written the poor Kiwi retrogressive quartet off. 'Girl's Best Friend' from their ailing, but John Paul Jones-produced second LP, provides proof, however, that - even still - few kick up a storm quite this hysterically and unashamedly; Dolf and co. kick out sterling licks and cum-soaked riffage more profusely than most, if at the price of having not moved on all that much.
