Nine Black Alps - 'Cosmopolitan' / 'Over The Ocean' (Melodic)

'We'll be dead by sunrise...'
Angst-rock. So last-whenever. Richey Manic didn't disappear for this.
Or did he? For Nine Black Alps are the exception to the rule, the last gang in town that can get away with grungey power-chords and chugging repetitions, delivered in a salacious snarl and a nuclear-bunker's worth of all-out wallop. They're northern, you know. That'd explain it. None of that wimpish, southern whimsy - NBA get gritty, dirty and don't forget to coat it in a paste of melodic impishness that simultaneously delights and appals.
So the choruses of 'Cosmopolitan' and 'Over The Ocean' (especially the latter) are almost saccharine-accessible with fist-in-the-air, anthemic righteousness - yet the brooding interludes of messy fretboard interplay prevents the whole thing from appealing to your younger sister. Nine Black Alps convey the sort of unbridled, youthful panache and abandon that only pissed-off kids can; there's urgency, passion and a whole f**k-load of jaws waiting to drop at their every frustrated hair-flick. Frantic menace you'll embrace, don't let them out of your sight.
