The Donnas - 'Fall Behind Me' (Atlantic)
2/5

Big riffs, and big hair. And (sadly), no, we're not talking 80's hair metal bands; we're ousting San Francisco Bay Area's femme quartet, The Donnas. For the girls are back with their sixth album, 2004's 'Gold Medal'. Sixth, you ask? Even though the ladies are best known for 2002's 'Spend the Night', and the *cough* urbanely-titled single 'Take It Off', they originally started out sounding like a Ramones tribute band, and were once on the same label as Green Day. Honest.
Today, we find them not so much riot grrls but glossy pinups, with bigger hair, and bigger riffs, more in the vein of AC/DC. And 'Fall Behind Me' does boast that killer riff, but that's about it. The production is smooth to a fault, with lacklustre vocals dragging the ditty down in the mire of mediocrity. Just like the never-ending revamps of the Barbie doll, the entire affair is just a bit plastic.
