Graham Coxon - 'Freakin' Out' / 'All Over Me' (Transcopic)
4/5
By: Thomas Hannan
A riff you'll be certain you've heard before (and not just upon the single's first release a few months back), but you won't care. Some off-the-cuff lyrics seemingly about not really having that much to write about. The chorus, undoubtedly, of the year. The most characteristic, spasmodically genius guitar solo in aeons. That's 'Freakin' Out', a dig at all that's trendy, whilst in an ideal world it would be the height of cool itself.
Merely in a 7"-release back in March, this sold enough copies to finally break Graham Coxon in to the UK top-40 as a solo artist. But lo, what's this? Another reason to force the release even higher this time around? Yup, as a double A-side you see, the equally enthralling but much more reserved, somewhat ethereal 'All Over Me' rides the coat-tails of 'Freakin' Out' into the public's consciousness, and a good thing too. This is another side to the snotty punk of the more well-known half of the release, a showcase for a varied, subtle songwriter, awash with strings and luscious melodies. The brash and the beautiful all in one tidy package - let's try and beat number 37 this time, shall we guys?
