The Playwrights – 'Guy Debord Is Really Dead' (Sink & Stove)

4/5

By: Thomas Hannan

The Playwrights - 'Guy Debord...'Four and a half minutes long; a continuous slice of twinkling tune - on paper, it doesn't come across as that bizarre a listen. However, in the verse at least, 'Guy...' seems to come to a juddering halt every three seconds or so. Disjointed isn't the half of it.

Misleadingly, this may make the Playwrights come across as much more abrasive than this charming, disorderly little offering makes them out. But no, there's no scathing guitar sound to knock us off our feet, no words of contention, no pace that'll leave you spinning; just an odd little structure and an even more perplexing little melody, something along the lines of Pavement covering an At The Drive-In number.

Now that'd be quite something, wouldn't it? Let's entertain that thought for a while... Whilst 'Guy Debord Is Really Dead' doesn't quite warrant that magical status, it's still an intriguing introduction to a band who admirably endeavour to give us melody by way of something other than a yawn-inducing, normal verse-chorus-verse structure.
