Sum 41 - 'We're All To Blame' (Mercury)
2/5
By: Kevin Molloy
Quasi-political lyrics, quasi-nu-metal riffage; we'll leave the qualifying prefixes off from now, but you get the picture. Sum 41's own picture would be a schematic diagram, with an audience of 14-year-olds struggling a little overtly with their adolescence in a mosh-pit at a school disco on the far right. On the left, the components of every song they've ever released, ready to be reconfigured for this, the latest single.
Yet criticism can't be brought to bear upon them for too long. This is their job, and a job they're doing more than aptly; they're well along to the road to becoming so institutionalised that their own name could serve as a qualifier... this is 'sum41' - interesting. Meaning, in layman's terms, it's 'nearly' interesting. Alright as a bit of fun, then, but 'nearly' really isn't enough to remember anyone by.
