The Others - 'Stan Bowles' (Poptones)
3/5
By: Kevin Molloy
Your friends will only take you so far. This is a lesson The Others are soon to learn, despite that friend being the currently ubiquitous Mr Doherty. The problem is that, behind the newfound fame there needs to lay something more substantial than imitation and regurgitation.
This is not to say that The Others fall wholly into disregard. 'Stan Bowles' does have a quirky charm to its whine, not least because of that most curious of repeated lines, 'QPR, 1975'. And whilst tunefulness wanders far from frontman Dominic Masters' vocals, the reverberating picked six-strings compensate for them with melodious ease.
But the guitar work is so normal. It's the voice that makes this different, thing is, we can't decide if we even like it. One thing's for certain, the blend is intriguing, and they've definitely gained our attention. Given their status as debutants (sort of), perhaps there is little more that we should expect... for now.
