The Basement - 'Do You Think..?' (Deltasonic)

3/5

By: Thomas Hannan

The Basement - 'Do You...?'Whilst contemporary classical musicians may sound like a contradiction in terms, they are probably the only group of artists who can so blatantly steal from the past without even a hint of criticism from any quarter. For some reason, in our rock music, we expect a degree of fearless innovation. Something we've not heard before. Sonic novelty may not be The Basement's strong point, something which may prove more of a problem as things progress, but they can at least milk a tune.

'Do You Think You're Movin On?' is distinctly, unashamedly, surprisingly country rock. Ella Guru are currently trying something similar but much more restrained, The Basement's tunes are infinitely more up-front, taking a moment to master and a lifetime to get out of the head. A gentle shuffle, jangling but gutsy guitars and solos wherever they can fit, it's like 'Don't Look Back in Anger' with added 'yee-hah!' factor.

It's merely the fact that we've heard this all before that stops it from soaring. It does sound as if it could have been written at any point in the past forty years. But, much to its credit, it'd still be a really charming little number whichever era it reared its head in.
