Delays - 'Lost In A Melody' (Rough Trade)

4/5

By: Thomas Hannan

Delays - 'Lost...'If ever there was a more fittingly descriptive title for a band than 'Lost In A Melody', without adding the words 'floppy hair and ace taste in jumpers' in brackets on the end, then we haven't heard it. But conversely, single-wise at least, this is perhaps the most aggressive mood we've noticed the Delays in up 'til now.

Unsurprisingly, they're incapable of abandoning the concept of a fine tune altogether, but this is more lost in fuzz than lost in a melody. As such, it's a lot less instant than their last, ridiculously catchy bunch of singles, but all the more rewarding in the long term because of it. If you all you crave is proper, sparkling Delays song-craft however, skip to track two, where the some might argue superior 'Wanderlust' resides - a glorious, swoon-inducing song of the type we're perhaps a bit more used to.

Two sides to a band then - one we're happily accustomed to, and a more prominent direction the Delays themselves don't seem one hundred percent at ease with yet, but still they manage to make some quietly compelling, nonetheless accessible music arise from the slight fervour of these noises all the same. Playing to your strengths, whilst still looking forward - this lot have got the right idea.
