The White Stripes - 'Jolene' (XL)

3/5

By: Tim Dellow

The White Stripes - 'Jolene'Taken from the film 'The White Stripes Under Blackpool Lights', filmed entirely on super 8, which apparently, captures the vitality of their live show. The definitive White Stripes cover (although we do have a soft spot for their rendition of 'Over Jordan/Wayfaring Stranger'), in its perfect studio incarnation, was originally released as a limited 7" before 'White Blood Cells' forced them into the veins of the mainstream.

Back then, the subtle queering of Dolly Parton's redneck classic, delicately re-interpreted a simple song of jealously, peeling away the drama and exposing the helpless position of the singer. Here, Jack camps it up to the crowd so much, he's practically inserting tent pegs up their asses. Ouch.
