The Radio Dept. - 'Ewan' (XL)

4/5

By: Toby L

The Radio Dept. - 'Ewan'The Radio Dept. - presently the most secluded, tearfully beautiful Swedes on Earth. Amid washes of scratching, Mary Chain guitars and hushed vocals, 'Ewan' breathes and throbs with the gentle authority most easily associated with a work-experience librarian, while bearing the same, naοve, vulnerable soul of musicians that have grouped together and written their first song. If only first songs could be quite this engrossing, however.

Then, the chilling, piano-infused electronica swaths of 'Slottet' - like Sigur Ros hijacked by Matmos - and sombre, acoustic waltz of 'The Things That Went Wrong': proof, as if any more were needed, that this band is one love affair we could never choose to abandon. It's even worth fighting for.
