Elliott Smith; a man that - readily exhausting the clichι and melodrama of the situation - had so much to live for, a man whose influence and passing still marks a sore place for anyone remotely engaged in serene, solo songcraft. 'Pretty (Ugly Before)', his first posthumous single, is typically Smith - questioning, unashamedly Beatles-harking, and shrouded in a deep sense of tragedy, caked in multi-tracked vocals and spiralling piano and guitars.
Still beautiful to the extent and exchange of tears, Elliott will never die; he's bigger, more enduring than that.
