New Tellers - 'Red Songs' (Crystal Songs)

3/5

By: Toby L

New Tellers - 'Red Songs'Following a false-start in the release-proceedings for The New Tellers, which ensued in their 'Some People Make Things Better' single being halted in its escape into retail record-stores, Sunderland's finest have got up, scraped together yet more churning, lyte, low-key pop melodies, and produced this - debut mini-LP, 'Red Songs'.

A graceful listen, all seven tracks emit a certain class and knack for involving instrumentation, the lead-track and aforementioned 'Some People...' perhaps the sweetest of the bunch, its lilting guitars, summery, bushy-tailed vocals and chirpy buoyancy sounding akin to the Super Furry Animals borrowing Mercury Rev's garage for a bit of a jam-sesh. When things remain in such a vein - the glorious understated undertones of 'A Little Love', for instance - the overall effect of the recordings is maximised, provided with optimum contrast for the snail's pace minimalism of final number, the bare 'For You'.

Hardly ones to reach for the distortion-pedal, what The New Tellers lack in entropic arrangements and punchy choruses they make up for within their almost unique brand of sweet, downbeat adventure. A more than adequate introduction, by all accounts.
