Athlete - 'Wires' (Parlophone)

Less than trendy they may be, but you discount Athlete's knack for the memorably melancholic choral sweep at your peril.
'Wires' - their most grown-up single to date - should see the band shake off that 'cheeky Britpop revivalists' label and find it replaced with something altogether more exalted. Saliently, the track is not dissimilar to any number of songs on Coldplay's 'Parachutes' - so it's global adulation and Hollywood A-list girlfriends just around the corner then, lads...
