Hal - 'What A Lovely Dance' (Rough Trade)
4/5
By: Toby L
If it weren't for the screeching, Theremin-cum-siren obliteration two-thirds in, Hal could well have been slung into the retro fodder bin.
But, that said, 'What A Lovely Dance' unfurls most favourably after multiple listens; like a classic, winsome '70s ode your parents shoved down your throat, regaling of the night they met. 'Oh, dearest,' they'll bore you, 'it was such a perfect night; your father bought me flowers and we held each other all night long... This is the song that played when we first kissed.' It's sickening, and endearing. But ultimately irrefutable.
We shouldn't like this, out of sheer virtue of encouraging the new. Yet good songs are good songs. And Hal seem to be able to write them at the drop of a vocal-quiver.
