Nice Man - 'Sauciehall & Hope (A Pop Opera)' (Shoeshine)
3/5
By: Joshua K

Some band-names, you just look at them and know
exactly what kind of music you're going to get. Think
The Strokes. Think Motorhead and Metallica. Think
The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. Think Primal
Scream (at least the later incarnations).
To this pantheon, add Nice Man.
Of course, mentioning Nice Man in the same breath as
these other acts should also tell you something else:
what this record isn't. So, fine readers, if
you're looking for the latest new rock thrills, you've
come to the wrong place.
But wait! Don't leave yet. After all, do we really
need the next Hoggboy? Sometimes, 40 minutes of
classic pop in a Byrds, Gram Parsons and Beach
Boys-stylee - about falling in and out of love, by a
man who wears his heart on his sleeve - is all the
nourishment a post-modern soul needs. If that's what
you're looking for, then this first solo album by
Francis (Teenage Fanclub and BMX Bandits) MacDonald
delivers in spades. And tumbleweeds.
In short: be sure you're in the right frame of mind.
But resistance is futile if you are.
Though, as a Yank, I must ask: what is this
Scottish obsession with country music? Emails,
please, to the usual address.
