Kaiser Chiefs - 'Oh My God' (B-Unique)
4/5
By: Kevin Molloy
Lead guitars, power-chords and the relentless nag of 'Oh my God, I can't believe it'. If we left it here, nobody would ever buy The Kaiser Chiefs.
Far be that from our desired effect. The brilliant jazzy piano refrain cascades over into 80's production six-strings, wandering, old-skool rock 'n' roll bass and the disengaged verse vocals ('You work in a shirt with your name-tag on, drifting apart like a plate tectonic'). Actually, the lyrics are too good to sample but one, our vocalist also critiques, 'Settling down in your early twenties, sucking more blood than a back-street dentist'.
Yet the 'Chiefs seem to be unsure whether they'd prefer to populate a stadium or a discotheque; for now, it looks set they could conquer both. The track burns out on a throat-splitting scream, and you're left exhausted and exhilarated, and just mildly concerned over what could ever come next, on the decks or the LP. Still, in their own words, they're going to 'come back stronger than a powered-up Pac Man'. We're lookin' forwards to it.
