22-20s - 'Such A Fool' (Heavenly)
3/5
By: Kevin Molloy
Guitar-wrangling pomp, acerbic emotional venting in the garage-rock tradition: we'll never get enough. The vocals: more sneered than sung. Instruments: pounded as much as played. In 'Such A Fool', 22-20s truly hit the nail on the head - and proceed to hammer it home relentlessly.
But it does have its downsides. The chorus is naggingly incessant, and the production is high; for every knob twiddled and note perfected in the studio, the vitality diminished somewhat. Still, there's an awesome array of guitar contortions, building a multi-layered cohesion of humming distortion and buzzing harmonics. With the Hammond in the background the rock is given that slightly more classic edge, pulling Martin Trimble's lot slightly in front of the multitudinous crowd of peers trying to fill the same niche.
