M83 - 'Don't Save Us From The Flames' (Gooom)

4/5

By: Kevin Molloy

M83 - 'Don't Save...'It hits you from the first second, and continues to do so throughout. Quite with what, you're unsure, and we're not even sure what it makes us feel, but this song has impact. Perhaps it's because you don't have a clue what's being said (something about flames, presumably), but mystery shrouds any attempt to interpret.

What doesn't need exact definition is the glory of it all. The keys seem veritably patriotic, but none of that national anthem variety, more a kind of venerable swoon in the face of such vertiginous plummets of sound. And the whole thing could have been composed on your average household keyboard... amazing what the right pair of hands can do with the simplest of materials.

As if the ambient dance of the A-side was insufficient, all praise be to M83 for providing a potentially superior B-side. Imagine Air cavorting with Radiohead and deciding to drunkenly write an epic for our age, et voila: 'Until The Night Is Over', its weighty 8-minutres passing you by in a melancholy blur. Our simple question? Why aren't M83 troubling the charts in the way their French dance contemporaries have? It surely won't be long with tracks of this sensibility and grandeur.
