Aberfeldy - 'Love Is An Arrow' (Rough Trade Records)
3/5
By: JJ Florio
Over the years, expressions of love have stoked many a troubled artiste's creative fire with interpretations of the big 'L' manifesting themselves in a huge, if oft ingratiating, variety of guises. From the joyous celebration of the Beatles' 'Good Day Sunshine' to the bleak emotional battering that is Leonard Cohen's 'Alleluia', we are positively wading knee-deep in the poetic juices that the subject of amour has all inspired.
With a suitable Valentine's Day release, the third single to be taken from Aberfeldy's debut, 'Love is an Arrow' is this Edinburgh outfit's ponderings on the big subject. The press release informs us that the song offers a 'dissertation on the L word'. Now the academic connotations of this statement are probably a little strong, rather, 'Arrow' gives us a list-like series of short whimsical definitions on what it actually is. So we are told that Love is 'a thing that I can't describe,' and that, 'you can find it in the dictionary under L,' with the main vocal lovingly harmonised by an interweaving second female voice, all wrapped in an easy lounge coating.
So heavy Freudian-like musings aside and without, thankfully, the omission of any cheese-out boy band sentiments, this little musical ditty is a perfectly light companion to any chocolate painting activities you may be embarking on this Valentine's.
