Mando Diao - 'You Can't Steal My Love' (Majesty)

Within the spiritual consciousness of the Krishna faith, it is believed that a different God is in charge of every element of human behaviour, both good and bad. From everyday actions such as blinking and breathing to one-off acts of great courage or cowardice, all are each assigned to the supervision of one such 'demi' God.
If this is indeed the case, we as a nation were last night descended upon by the Dark God of Musical Shallowness who manifested his evil form in the shape of the annual Brit Awards. Scaring shitless all true lovers of music with his evil blend of bubblegum pop sentiments, corporate ideals and vomit-inducing celebratory backslapping.
Hooray then for the Supreme God of Hard Rocking Musical Integrity then, who came to us in a dream late last night in the form of a 1962 Rose Wood Gibson SG. With an entourage that included the white-robed figures of Jeff Buckley, Kurt Cobain and John Bonham he graciously handed us the latest single from Mando Diao.
Taken from the Swedish band's forthcoming album 'Hurricane Bar', 'You Can't Steal My Love' is the sound of a group on a definite mission and it has been a while since a single with such a definite sense of purpose has graced our speakers. After a brief introduction of staccato drums stabs and beautifully sustained guitar chords, it takes us with the infectious and almost cheeky instrumental hook and then puts us down three minutes and ten seconds later, breathless and wondering how they managed to get in so much substance in such a space of time. There are many things on offer here, all of which are good; nagging riffs, effortless (and almost gospel-inspired) chord progressions with a lush sense of melody set to lyrics that are brimming with intelligence, telling us that when something in your life is truly precious, it can never be corrupted by any outside influence. Right on.
When music is as honestly conceived and as passionately performed as this, may the God of Global Exposure forever reward such true offerings to His table. Let us pray.
