The Duke Spirit - 'Lion Rip' (Loog)

3/5

By: Lauren Gallagher

The Duke Spirit - 'Lion Rip'First listen: ponder thundering guitars, a pert foot taps obediently. Second listen: shake hips in jeans. Third listen: jeans tear, and other garments are considered superfluous.

Yes, 'Lion Rip' is a slow burner, in the vein of fairly traditional rawk. Its intoxicating qualities don't take hold right away, but gradually one is drawn in by lead singer Leila's deep and teasing howls, not unlike Polly. The subtler 'Now Be Still' echoes both gospel and blues, with its hypnotic throb and a tune that sounds so classic its familiarity is eerie.

And although these songs boast a sensual swagger, the sound itself isn't necessarily fresh. But perhaps for some, it is viewed as intent and is not to be sneered; these tracks make Duke Spirit sound like they were discovered in a time capsule at the closing of the 60's and dawning of the 70's, with a sultry eye forward a few decades. If you are looking for a new 'scene' or new musical saviors, DS might not be the exact troupe you're looking for, but if you just wanna rock a bit, tear off a few clothes (with a reverence lacking at, say, a Babyshambles gig), and strut, they just might be your hottest new item.
