RTX - 'Speed To Roam EP' (Drag City)

Royal Trux; immeasurably influential NYC, lo-fi rock 'n' roll tykes that shaped and defined a whole era of eventual, half-arsed punk scrapings. They wrote tunes. But clouded them in hoarse vocals and awkward non-pretence that confined them to the 'niche' bin.
RTX - Jennifer Herrema of the band's new outfit - is the much-anticipated spin-off. Her debut EP 'Speed To Roam' is a flawlessly tuneful introduction of fiddly guitar-riffery and almost heavy metal nihilism; a live-rendition of 'Low Ass' is so low-slung and filthy, we've got our therapist on speed-dial, just in case.
Our opener and title-track, meanwhile, is slightly less ravaging; tuneful and wide-eyed in its vigour - hardly the sound of veterans; whilst the stop-start chug of 'Joint Chief Beach Freak' (again live) and 'Kitty Grom' are markers as to what Courtney Love really ought to have been up to.
