Queens Of The Stone Age - 'Little Sister' (Interscope)
4/5

'Little Sister' enters this world with a healthy, belligerent chug, boasting a rhythm so simple, it's scary - and, being QOTSA, it's all completely addictive. So on their latest Josh 'Hulk' Homme conjures up the influence of sometime-band member/peer Dave Grohl with a Foo's-esque chorus. But for any fans of either band, this is no bad thing; ominous sighs moan in the background, swelling and subsiding like a haunting, possessed fog, while the freeform metal guitar-solo eventually segues into a tight, raging closure. If Bach had an electric guitar, it might sound like this.
Baroque? Yes. Indulgent? Perhaps. Fans of the Stone Age will be satisfied with a new metal 'chune' to brain-haemorrhage to. And though if you have yet to be persuaded by either QOTSA or Foo's post-grunge antics, 'Little Sister' will probably do little to reel you in, it was at least worth a try. Otherwise, join yours truly in celebrating the return of truly justified headbanging.
