Gisli - 'The Day It All Went Wrong' (EMI)
3/5

Bad days, like taxes, death and FM radio morning crews are a depressingly unavoidable hazard in life. Some days, what starts with the annoyingly benign; no clean socks, washing up not done, no change for the bus etc. can all too easily descend into the dark chain of events that constitute the truly bad day, the ones where you have to deal with a seemingly never ending barrage of shit whilst the theme tune of 'Friends' is being looped in your head (noooooo).
Meeting the issue head on is Icelandic artist Gisli with his latest 'The Day It All Went Wrong', an ode to the moments in life you'd rather forget. The song's immediate witty lyrical punch is rich with gall, lines like 'My coffee made me angry' delivered with a suitably deadpan weariness. The disastrous events of the day are also mirrored musically, the CD seeming to skip before the first chorus and with all the instrumentation falling apart at the song's close. All too apt.
Yet, 'The Day It All Went Wrong' as a single, although very enjoyable, has got a whiff of the novelty record about it, but next time you wake up with all the signs pointing in the direction of 'tits-up', know that this particular Icelander is sharing your pain.
