Ocean Colour Scene - 'North Atlantic Drift' (Sanctuary)

2/5

Ocean Colour Scene - 'North Atlantic Drift'

Steadfastly, resolutely unfashionable, surely even Ocean Colour Scene's harshest critics (and there's no shortage of them in existence) can't help but grudgingly respect their resolve.

'North Atlantic Drift', the Brummie quartet's sixth studio album, is just as stubbornly opposed to musical evolution as anything they've done before. And yet there'll be no shortage of fans willing to part with their cash in exchange for this record or for tickets for the accompanying nationwide tour.

And 'NAD' is just as you would expect: despite the undeniable musical talent, there's nothing here to equal the glory days of 'Moseley Shoals'. Sure, provided are the 'anthems' (new single 'I Just Need Myself', pick-of-the-bunch 'Oh Collector' ), the 'ballads' ('She's Been Writing', 'Second Hand Car') and the ones somewhere in between ('Golden Gate Bridge').

Whether you find their attitude towards 'progression' brilliant or infuriating, one thing's for sure: OCS sure as hell ain't about to change.
