Pink Grease - 'Peaches' (Mute)

3/5

By: Thomas Hannan

Pink Grease - 'Peaches'It's a funny little effect this single has. One track on it can quite easily change conceptions of Pink Grease as odd-looking, try-hard reactionary rock and roll loons into that of a band who - hey! - can muster a pretty good tune after all, with this pleasant little stomp more than a trace reminiscent of 'Ziggy Stardust'-era Bowie (but, of course, not as good). The other will make you even more of a fan of Peaches than you already should be.

Clever, write a song that shares a name with someone you want to remix it, and she's bound to say yes. It wouldn't succeed in all cases, or every single album would have a track called 'Andre 3000' or 'The Neptunes' on it, but here it works a treat. Quite a lot more enticing than its original form, Peaches brings the proper sleaze that Pink Grease always allude to, breaking the song apart, adding her own vocals and an unhealthily dark underbelly to the previously inoffensive surroundings.

The band come out of the whole affair a heck of a lot filthier - and all the better for it. Posturing is all well and good, but here Peaches walks Pink Grease's talk for them. Let's pray they learned something from it.
